The Problem with Plastic Bags

The Sustainable Development Fund has awarded the campaign to make Hay plastic bag free a grant. This money will be used to provide starter packs of cornstarch Biobags to retailers who have requested them - and to pay for the publicity needed to help get the campaign off the ground.

The Co-op has very generously donated a fairtrade reusable cotton carrier to every household in Hay - this is currently being distributed by a band of volunteers, along with a letter outlining the aims of the campaign.

In addition, Hay-on-Wye branded reusable and environmentally friendly carrier bags will be available to buy from December 1st. Come and buy one from our stall in the Butter Market on Saturday, December 1st or they will be available from a number of shops including Pembertons, The Great English Outdoors, Number Two and the Tourist Information Office.

From 24th November, for a week, extra plastic recycling points provided by Powys Council will be available in the town (look out for the large red wheelie bins in the Market Square below the Castle and by the Clock Tower) so please take the opportunity to clear out any plastic bags you might have lying around and be ready to go pbf (plastic bag free) from December 1st!
