Launch date for PBF Hay Saturday 1st December 2007

From Saturday, December 1st we’re aiming to make Hay PBF - plastic bag free. The move has the full support of the Chamber of Commerce, the Hay Festival and the majority of shopkeepers in the town, but we need your help to make it happen, too.

What you can do to help Plastic Free Hay

Plastic Bag Free Hay-on-WyeIt’s incredibly simple. Just bring your own shopping bag into town, the same way your parents did! To encourage you, the Co-op has very generously donated a fairtrade reusable cotton carrier to every household in Hay. In addition, we’re offering Hay-on-Wye branded reusable and environmentally friendly carrier bags to buy from December 1st.

As just one of these cloth bags can replace at least 1000 plastic bags over its lifetime, you can see just how easy it is for you to make a big difference!

If you forget your bag, many shops will be offering a cornstarch one, which is strong, water-resistant and compostable. There’s a small charge of 5p to help retailers cover the cost of these - and to encourage you to switch.

Please join in and support us in this initiative. We think it’s a good move for Hay, and it’s got to be one of the easiest and most effective steps to help the environment you can make.

Many thanks

The End of Plastic Bags in Hay-on-Wye

Latest News about Plastic Bag Free Hay-on-Wye

It has been one year since we launched the campaign to make Hay PBF (plastic bag free). Thank you very much for your support during this time and for your commitment to stop giving out plastic carriers to customers and to switch to environmentally friendly alternatives.

There has been amazing progress since last December, notably in the town itself, but also nationally we are really beginning to see significant change take place.

  • The Government are still looking to ban plastic bags in supermarkets by 2009 and as a result Tesco, Sainsbury & Asda have been forced to take action.
  • Aldi, Lidl, M&S, B&Q and many other stores are now charging for plastic bags.
  • The Welsh Assembly is on the verge of introducing a plastic bag levy – it could become law within a month.
  • Over 130 towns are now in the process of going completely PBF, including locally both Abergavenny & Crickhowell.

Hay has been at the forefront of this revolution and we are really grateful for your backing. Please continue to display the PBF poster or information card prominently in your shop window, so that people can see that you are one of the many retailers that support the campaign.

STOP PRESS: 100% compostable bags, made from waste potato starch, are now available. You can order them from Worcestershire based company Biopac www.biopac.co.uk
